Our Five Areas

The School for Rhetors focuses on helping writers through mentoring, but also teaching about five areas:

  • Rhetorical Theory

  • Composition Theory

  • Literary Theory

  • Popular Culture

  • Education

Our ultimate goal is helping people become Lifelong Learners who will be able to exercise critical thinking and learn on their own terms on an independent basis.

Rhetorical Theory

In a digital age filled with algorithmic persuasion and misinformation, the ability to understand how language works is effectively a superpower. This area provides the foundational tools to analyze how you are being moved by the world around you. Instead of just memorizing ancient terms, we use these as a "stealth framework" to deconstruct the dynamic, persuasive environments of your everyday life, from social media to political discourse.

Composition Theory

Forget everything you were told about "fixing grammar." Based on the work of James Gee, we view writing as a complex, recursive problem-solving process. You aren't just a student completing a task; you are an active rhetor learning to navigate system designs, constraints, and affordances. This pillar treats every document or digital project as a design challenge, teaching you the "rhetorical muscles" required to compose effectively in any medium.

Literary Theory

This is where we pull back the curtain on the stories that shape our culture. We treat literacy as a fluid social practice rather than a narrow academic skill. By applying various analytical lenses to everything from classical foundational texts to modern visual narratives, you learn to read between the lines and understand the "lived theory" embedded in the world’s "monsters" and heroes.

Popular Culture

Popular culture is our primary engine for analysis—our "X-factor". We use the movies, shows, and games you already love—like Star Trek, Chuck, or Better Call Saul—as a "Trojan Horse" to deliver high-level theory. By bridging the gap between PhD-level specialization and the media we consume daily, we prove that rhetorical strategy isn't just for textbooks; it’s embedded in the very fabric of our entertainment.

Education

Most academic spaces teach to an "imagined ideal student," but the School for Rhetors is built for the actual student ready to take control of their own intellectual life. This area frames learning as a "rhetorical act" of design, moving away from passive consumption. Based on a principle of rhetorical egalitarianism, we reject the idea that you need "natural talent" to be a scholar; instead, we provide the mentorship and resources for you to become an active participant—a Rhetor—in your own education.
